River’s Edge Hospital Surgical Technology Lab coming to South Central College

(January 9, 2024) – In Fall 2024, South Central College (SCC) will launch a new Surgical Technology program.  Students in the new program will soon have a new state-of-the-art lab thanks to a generous donation from River’s Edge Hospital of $644,450. In recognition of their contribution, the lab will be named the River’s Edge Hospital Surgical Technology Lab. The new lab space is expected to be completed in 2026.

Officials from South Central College, South Central College Foundation and River’s Edge Hospital today shared details of the new program and contribution.

“Surgical Technology is a program our area health care partners have been requesting for some time, and we are pleased to be able to play a role in providing this critical workforce to employers and opportunities for great jobs for our students,” said SCC President Annette Parker.

The donation by River’s Edge Hospital is the largest ever received by the South Central College Foundation. “We are profoundly grateful for the extraordinary support provided by River’s Edge Hospital,” said Erin Aanenson, Executive Director of the South Central College Foundation. “Strong community partnerships are vital to the success of South Central College and its students.”

Surgical technologists work alongside and assist surgeons, nurses and other members of the health care team before, during and after an operation. Responsibilities may include setting up the instruments and equipment that is required for the procedure, sterilizing equipment and taking an inventory to ensure there are enough supplies for surgery, preparing the patient for surgery, passing the surgeon instruments and sterile supplies throughout the operation, taking a count of all surgical instruments and supplies after the operation, and maintaining an overall sterile environment throughout the surgery.

“River’s Edge Hospital is proud to partner with South Central College in the development of the Surgical Technology Lab.”  said Paula Meskan, River’s Edge Hospital Chief Executive Officer.  “The role of the surgical technologist is critical for the success of any surgical procedure.  This role has been increasingly difficult to fill, and we believe that the development of the program in our region has the potential to be hugely successful.  The ability to offer the program locally will provide new opportunities for students, and we are anticipating the ability to provide a successful clinical site for the students in the program and look forward to having graduates of the program joining our staff.  Our contribution to the program demonstrates our commitment to its future success.”   The donation by River’s Edge Hospital will be paid to the South Central College Foundation over a 10-year period.

The River’s Edge Hospital Surgical Technology Lab is part of SCC’s 2024 Instructional Lab Bonding Project Request to the legislature. “Industry support is important to legislators, so in addition to benefiting the Surgical Technology program, the contribution from River’s Edge Hospital will also be seen as a plus for our project by legislators,” said Parker.
